When can I buy travel insurance to cover a wildfire?
You can buy travel insurance with cancellation coverage for wildfires up until the day before your departure date.
Most policies with Trip Cancellation have coverage for natural disasters. This can refund a traveler’s trip expenses if they can’t travel because of a wildfire. However, travelers must read their policy’s specific requirements for coverage.
Travelers may be covered if any of the following situations impact their trip:
- They have to be evacuated to a place of safety and they have at least 50% of their trip remaining
- Their destination is made uninhabitable by the wildfires
- Their home is made uninhabitable because of wildfires and they can no longer go on their trip
