Can I cancel my trip due to a winter storm or blizzard?

Last Updated: 1 min read

You may be covered to cancel your trip if a winter storm or blizzard seriously impacts your travel and you had a policy in place before the storm was named.

However, travel insurance will not cover you to cancel simply because a storm might occur at your destination or affect your travel.

Trip Cancellation coverage is triggered by at least one of the following specific events, which vary by policy but may include:

  • At least 12-48 hour delay of your flight or cruise due to the storm
  • The storm renders your hotel or other accommodations uninhabitable
  • A mandatory evacuation due to the storm (restrictions apply)

If you want to be able to cancel your trip due to a blizzard or severe winter weather, even if you do not meet the requirements for coverage, you can only do so with the “Cancel for Any Reason” upgrade. This upgrade can increase the cost of a policy by about 40-50%, is only available within 14-30 days of your initial trip booking, and requires you to insure 100% of your trip cost.

If you use this upgrade to cancel for a reason not otherwise covered by your policy, you must do so at least 2-3 days before your departure date and you will only be reimbursed up to 50-75% of your trip cost.

This information is time sensitive and may vary by policy. If you have questions about a specific policy, please contact us directly at 800-240-0369. Our customer service representatives are available from 8am to 10pm ET, seven days a week, and are delighted to help.
