From zip lining through the lush jungle trees to catching rays on pristine white sand beaches, Belize offers endless opportunities for adventure and relaxation. With so much on offer, it’s no surprise that Belize is becoming one of the most popular Caribbean destinations.
While travel insurance is not a requirement to visit Belize, many travelers purchase a policy to protect their trip investment and cover them in the event of a medical emergency while abroad. Squaremouth breaks down key considerations to make when considering travel insurance for your upcoming Belize adventure.
In 2022, the average Belize vacation cost travelers roughly $5,200. If a traveler needs to cancel their trip, they may stand to lose thousands of dollars if their trip is not protected by insurance.
Trip Cancellation coverage can reimburse travelers up to 100% of their nonrefundable trip costs if they need to cancel their plans for a covered reason. This can include prepaid flight, hotel, and activity expenses. The most common covered cancellation reason is injury or illness. Inclement weather and natural disasters can also be covered by this benefit, which can be common travel issues during certain months in Belize.
Most policies that include Trip Cancellation coverage also include the Trip Interruption benefit, which can reimburse travelers if they need to end their Belize trip early for a covered reason. Under this benefit, travelers may be eligible for reimbursement for their unused trip costs, as well as additional transportation expenses needed to return home.
Illness or injury can happen at any time during your trip. If you’re planning a trip to Belize, it’s highly recommended that you have travel medical insurance to cover any unexpected medical expenses that may arise during your trip. Travel medical insurance can be bought separately, or as part of a comprehensive policy.
The main component to travel medical coverage is Emergency Medical, which can reimburse the costs to treat a medical emergency during a trip. Most medical policies will cover ambulance services, hospital and doctor bills, emergency dental services, and x-rays or lab costs. For travel to Belize, Squaremouth recommends a policy with at least $50,000 in Emergency Medical coverage.
The Medical Evacuation benefit can provide coverage for transportation to the nearest adequate medical facility in the event of a medical emergency. Belize has limited medical facilities, and serious medical emergencies may require evacuation to a neighboring country for treatment. For that reason, we recommend at least $100,000 in Medical Evacuation coverage for Belize trips.
Most comprehensive policies also offer additional benefits that address common traveler concerns heading into a Belize vacation, such as delay coverage and luggage protection.
A policy’s Travel Delay benefit can reimburse travelers for expenses incurred throughout the duration of their delay, including meal and accommodation costs. For travelers taking multiple flights to reach Belize, the Missed Connection benefit can offer coverage for travelers that miss a connecting flight and need to make new travel arrangements.
In regards to luggage coverage, most policies include coverage if bags are delayed, lost, stolen, or damaged. The Baggage Delay benefit can cover the cost of necessities, such as toiletries and clothes, while a traveler waits for their bags. The Baggage & Personal Items Loss benefit may reimburse travelers if their luggage or belongings are lost, stolen, or damaged at any point during their trip.
Belize is renowned for its diving and snorkeling opportunities, thanks to the presence of the world’s second-largest barrier reef, which features the notable Great Blue Hole. In addition, Belize is also home to famous hiking, caving, and rappelling sites. It’s important to note that these excursions may not be covered by most travel insurance policies.
If you’re participating in the many adventurous activities Belize has to offer, it’s recommended that you get a policy that includes coverage for Sports & Activities. This benefit is designed to cover travelers who are participating in sports or adventurous activities, which may otherwise be excluded.
Those traveling with their own adventure gear or sports equipment can also receive coverage under a policy’s Sports Equipment Loss benefit. This can reimburse a traveler in the event their own sports equipment is lost or damaged during a covered trip.
