What is a look back period?

Last Updated:

Short Answer

The look back period for a policy determines whether you have a Pre-Existing Condition. It is the period of time that the insurance provider looks back to see if there has been any changes in a medical condition.

More Detail

The look back period is typically 60-180 days prior to the effective date of the policy for Trip Cancellation policies, and 12-36 months prior to the effective date of the policy for International Medical Policies.

A provider will typically define a Pre-Existing Condition as receiving medical advice, diagnosis, treatment or recommendation for treatment during the look back period prior to the effective date of your policy.

In the event that you file a claim, a provider will look back into your medical history for the amount of time specified on the policy to determine if your condition was Pre-Existing.
