They were wonderful. I fell and broke my leg in Israel. They helped modify my return flight and transportation to and from the airport. Others in my group who didn’t get travel insurance now all say they will just to be safe. They even called me when I reached the US to make sure I made it home safely.

South African Airlines would not allow me to board the plane in Johannesburg for Nigeria. My “visa on arrival” paper work was not accepted although we were told it was ok by the Nigerian visa agency. So I needed to book another flight that by-passed Nigeria in order to get to Sierra Leone (our final destination). I also needed to cancel the Lagos hotel. The return flight thru Lagos was ok since I was only in transit to another flight. Also the flight from Lagos to Freetown Sierra Leone had to be cancelled (just one way) because I could not get fly into Lagos.
I just received the letter from Broadspire that my entire claim was denied because it did not meet their policy criteria for Trip Interruption benefits. Broadspire Services, Inc., a subsidiary of Crawford & Company, is a third party administrator assigned to act on behalf of Generali Assicurazioni Generali to process my claim.
I thought that Trip interruption coverage is coverage that reimburses a traveler of their unused pre-paid trip costs when their trip has to be abandoned. I realize my situation is a bit unusual but it does fit into that category of trip coverage. This denial makes me not only want to avoid using April Insurance but from ever buying travel insurance again. I have used Squaremouth on several of my trips and have recommended you to my tours guests (I run tours to Africa). I am not sure I can now recommend getting any insurance since it coverage seems to be so restrictive.

Trip insurance was useless. It required a physician evaluation even though I purchased a "cancel for any reason" clause, at the cost of several hundred extra dollars. I am not spending another $300 for a doctor's appointment to meet paperwork requirements for the this trip insurance when the whole reason for "cancel for any reason" was to avoid that extra expense. I got sick before the trip, and I had purchased the extra coverage for that possibility - end of story. What a scam.

We thank Russell for his review and welcome the opportunity to respond. The Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) upgrade does allow one to cancel for a non-covered reason, but the policyholder still needs to qualify for coverage within the policy’s general terms and conditions.
Under our April Choice plan CFAR benefit, one of the requirements which must be met is to cancel your trip a minimum of 48 hours prior to the scheduled departure date. That provision is an industry standard & would be required with any CFAR policy he would purchase from any travel insurance company.
Unfortunately, Russell canceled with the airline the day of his scheduled departure & contacted our Claims Department for the first time that same day. Because he failed to take action 48 hours or more prior to his departure, filing a claim using CFAR is no longer an available option.
Russell did share he was cancelling due to illness, which is a covered reason. As with any travel insurance policy, he will be required to submit a physician’s statement noting that his sickness prevented him from traveling. However, Russell has stated that he did not want to go to the doctor for his sickness.
Russell has been issued a travel credit with the airline, which is valid for one year from the initial purchase date. In addition, should he wish to pursue the Cancellation for Medical reasons, claim forms have again, been emailed. Several voice mails were left with Russell, by the adjuster, to discuss his case. To date, he has not returned the calls.

"Cancel For Any Reason" does not in fact mean that. How about a straight forward, honest policy without a ton of fine print?
