We had to cancel our tour to Costa Rica a few hours before we were scheduled to leave because my husband's mother died suddenly. After cancelling the trip with the tour operator, I immediately called Travel Insured to let them know I would be making a claim for the entire amount of the tour. While I was still on the phone the woman I was speaking to emailed me the claim form with the list of what information I needed to provide to make the claim.
Once I had the death certificate, the final invoice from the tour operator listing date of payment, cancellation and notice of zero refund, and a copy of the credit card payment showing we actually paid the amount I was claiming, I attached Travel Insured's form and a cover letter explaining the circumstances and addressing each item on the list they had emailed me, even if only to state "not applicable". I created a PDF of the claim, emailed it to the address they gave me, and two weeks to the day received a check for the entire amount, almost $7000.

I previously had to make a large claim for reimbursement from another insurer and was paid the full amount. These are insurance companies, so they don't just pay out money based on what you think you should receive. You have to prove actual expenditure of monies. Always keep receipts and understand the terms of the policy you bought. If anything happens, call right away to find out what you are expected to do to have a successful claim.

I contacted them beforehand to make sure I understood a few provisions of the policy that were especially important to me. They did a great job explaining, so I felt sure that I was choosing the right alternative. That conversation helped me not "overbuy" -- we wanted the right insurance for us, not the most expensive possible, of course! I liked the range and amount of the coverage, and it turned out to be more economical than alternatives. Happily, I did not need to use the policy, we had a great and uneventful (from an insurance perspective) trip.

I filed a claim with Travel Insured International. They requested a several pieces of information, which I supplied. In a week they did not confirm they had received the information. I sent a follow-up email and they did not reply. I called them and they said the claim was "under review". They could not give an estimate of when the review would be done. Two more weeks have passed, still no communication from them.

I understand that it may take time to review a claim, but they should provide some feedback without me having to do all the contacting.

The claim was handled reasonably expeditiously. It took less than a month. Travel Insured did not keep me posted as to the progress of my claim, such as acknowledging that they had received my pdf files.

I though it took a little longer to get the claim processed than it should have. We did, however, get our full claim amount. We have been ask to return any part of the claim money that the airline might refund us. Is this how it is suppose to work?
