What is Cancel For Work Reasons Travel Insurance?

Cancel for Work Reasons is a travel insurance benefit that provides coverage if you need to cancel or interrupt a covered trip due to unforeseen work requirements.

Cancel for Work Reasons is often included within a travel insurance policy’s cancellation coverage. If your PTO is revoked before or during your scheduled trip, you may be reimbursed up to 100% of your prepaid, non-refundable trip costs.

Not all travel insurance plans include this coverage. Exclusions, coverage limits, and eligibility requirements for this benefit may differ by policy.

What Does Cancel For Work Reasons Cover?

Cancel for Work Reasons will cover your prepaid, non-refundable travel expenses if you, or your travel companion, are forced to cancel your plans due to unexpected work-related obligations.

The following events may be covered by your travel insurance coverage:

  • An employer revokes pre-approved vacation leave
  • An employer transfers you to a new location, forcing you to relocate your primary residence
  • You are directly involved in merger, acquisition, bankruptcy proceedings
  • Your place of work is impacted by a natural disaster, and you are part of the disaster recovery team

If you need to cancel your trip for work reasons before your scheduled departure date, your policy’s Trip Cancellation coverage will reimburse your covered trip expenses, such as airfare and accommodation expenses. Any cancellations that occur after your scheduled departure date will be covered by your plan’s Trip Interruption protection.

Cancel for Work Reasons coverage does not typically apply to independent contractors, temporary employees, or self-employed individuals. If these exclusions apply to you, you may want to consider adding the optional Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) add-on to your policy.

Cancel For Work Reasons Eligibility

To be eligible for reimbursement through the Cancel for Work Reasons benefit, you must purchase a comprehensive travel insurance policy that lists Cancel for Work Reasons as a covered reason to cancel or interrupt your trip. Typically, only full-time employees are eligible for coverage under this benefit.

While rare, some travel insurance companies list Cancel for Work Reasons as a time-sensitive benefit. This means that you’re required to buy travel insurance within a specific time frame after your initial trip deposits, typically 15-21 days. In addition, some travel insurance providers may list Cancel for Work Reasons as an optional upgrade that can be added at checkout.

Filing a Cancel for Work Reasons Claim

When filing a claim, your travel insurance company may require you to provide proof of your requirement to work, such as a notarized statement signed by an officer of their employer. Other documents, such as your travel itinerary and employment history may also be requested.

7. CANCEL FOR BUSINESS REASONS BENEFIT

The Insured’s coverage under the Cancel For Business Reasons Benefit will take effect as stated in SECTION II – EFFECTIVE AND TERMINATION DATES OF INSURANCE, A. EFFECTIVE DATE.

Subject to the Cancel For Business Reasons Benefit Maximum Covered Amount per Insured shown in the Schedule, if the Insured purchased Cancel for Business Reasons coverage, the Pre-Departure Trip Cancellation Benefits and Post-Departure Trip Interruption Benefits coverage will be extended to include the following unforeseeable events that occur while coverage is in effect:

a. the Insured is required to work during the Covered Trip. A notarized written statement by a company officer or the Human Resources department demonstrating revocation of previously approved time off will be required;

b. the Insured’s place of employment is rendered unsuitable for business due to burglary, fire, flood, volcano, earthquake, hurricane, or other natural disaster, and he/she is required to work as a result; or

c. the Insured is directly involved in the merger of his/her employer with another company or the acquisition of his/her employer by another company.

CANCEL FOR WORK REASONS

We will reimburse You, up to the Maximum Benefit Amount shown in the Schedule of Benefits, for the amount of the unused Non-Refundable prepaid Payments or Deposits for the Travel Arrangements You purchased for Your Trip, when You cancel Your Trip for one of the following covered Unforeseen reasons provided payment for this policy is received within the Time Sensitive Period:

a) Your or Your Traveling Companion’s transfer of employment of 100 miles or more by the employer with whom You or Your Traveling Companion are employed on Your Effective Date that requires Your or Your Traveling Companion’s principal residence to be relocated;

b) You or Your Traveling Companion, neither of whom is a company owner or partner or is self-employed, are required to work during the scheduled Trip, as attested in writing by an unrelated company official and/or the company’s Human Resources Department;

c) Your or Your Traveling Companion’s company is directly involved in either a merger with another company or is being acquired by another company. You or Your Traveling Companion must be an active, full-time employee and cannot be a company owner or partner or self employed, and You or Your Traveling Companion must be directly involved in such merger or acquisition;

d) Your or Your Traveling Companion’s place of employment is rendered unsuitable for business or company operations or is interrupted due to burglary, vandalism or a Natural Disaster, product recall, Bankruptcy or Default and You and/or Your Traveling Companion are required to work as a result.

TRIP CANCELLATION

If You cancel Your Trip prior to the Scheduled Departure Date, We will reimburse You, up to the Maximum Benefit Amount shown in the Schedule of Benefits, for unused, forfeited, prepaid non-refundable Payments or Deposits for the Travel Arrangements You purchased for Your Trip, provided the cancellation occurs while coverage is in effect for You and is due to any of the following covered Unforeseen reasons, as defined:

You or Your Traveling Companion have an involuntary transfer of employment within the same organization of two hundred fifty (250) or more miles which requires Your or Your Traveling Companion’s Primary Residence to be relocated. Notification of the transfer must occur after the Effective Date of Your Trip Cancellation Coverage. This provision is not applicable to temporary or seasonal employment, independent contractors, freelancer or selfemployed persons;

23. You or Your Traveling Companion are required to work during Your Trip. Vacation leave must have been already approved by Your or Your Traveling Companion’s employer and cancellation of vacation leave must occur after Your Trip Cancellation Effective Date. You or Your Traveling Companion must provide proof of requirement to work, such as a notarized statement signed by an officer of the employer. If You must start Your Trip late or are unable to complete Your Trip, We will reimburse You, up to the Maximum Benefit Amount shown in the Schedule of Benefits, for the unused, forfeited, prepaid non refundable Payments or Deposits paid for the Travel Arrangements You purchased for Your Trip plus the Additional Transportation Cost paid to either:

TRIP CANCELLATION AND INTERRUPTION

Benefit will be provided for loss(es) incurred by You for a covered Trip cancelled up to the date and time of departure or interrupted or delayed after the time and date of departure. A maximum benefit of up to the amount indicated in the Schedule of Benefits to cover certain expenses as listed below which result in the cancellation or interruption of Your Trip due to any of the following Unforeseen events:

(1) You or Traveling Companion is required to work during his/her scheduled Trip. Covered for 100% of trip cost if purchased within 15 days of trip deposit

TRIP CANCELLATION

The Company will reimburse for the Forfeited, pre-paid Trip Costs up to the Maximum Limit shown in the Schedule if the Insured’s Trip is cancelled prior to the scheduled Departure Date and time for an Unforeseen Covered Event listed below. If the Insured has part of their trip cancelled or changed, prior to the scheduled departure date and time, the Company will reimburse for:

a) Additional transportation expenses to reach the original Trip Destination; and
b) Unused portion of the non-refundable pre-paid insured Trip Costs.

The benefit payable under (a) above will not exceed the cost of economy airfare or the same class as the Insured’s original ticket by the most direct route, less any refunds paid or payable.

TRIP INTERRUPTION

The Company will reimburse up to the Maximum Limit shown in the Schedule if the Insured’s Trip is interrupted after the scheduled Departure Date and time for an Unforeseen Covered Event listed below. The benefit will be limited to the:

a) Unused portion of non-refundable pre-paid insured Trip Cost; and
b) Additional transportation expenses to either the Return Destination; or from the place that the Insured left the Trip to the place that they may rejoin the Trip; or
c) Additional transportation expenses to reach the original Trip Destination if the Insured is delayed and leaves after the Departure Date.

The benefits payable under b) and c) above will not exceed the cost of economy airfare or the same class as the Insured’s original ticket by the most direct route, less any refunds paid or payable.

UNFORESEEN COVERED EVENTS:

TRIP CANCELLATION

We will pay you up to the maximum amount shown in the schedule of benefits for loss(es) incurred by you or your traveling companion for a covered trip cancelled up to the date and time of departure due to any of the following unforeseen events:

Work/Military/School

a. You or your traveling companion or parent or legal guardian if the insured is a child has an involuntary employer-initiated permanent transfer within the same organization of two hundred fifty (250) or more miles which requires your primary residence to be relocated provided that you have been an active employee for the same employer for at least three (3) continuous years. Notification of the transfer must occur after the effective date and the transfer must occur within thirty (30) days of the scheduled departure date;

c. You or your traveling companion are required to work during the covered trip. You or your traveling companion must demonstrate proof of requirement to work, such as a notarized statement signed by an officer of your or your traveling companion’s employer and said employer must be comprised of at least twenty-five (25) employees. You or your traveling companion cannot be a company owner or partner. This benefit only applies if the policy has been purchased within fifteen (15) days of your initial payment for the covered trip;

d. You or your traveling companion are employed as a full time teacher or other full time employee, a student or parent of a student at a primary or secondary school and are required to complete an extended school year that falls on or beyond the scheduled departure date. School extensions due to extra-curricular or athletic events are not covered;

e. Your company is directly involved in a merger or acquisition. You must be an active employee of the company(ies) that is/are merging and you must be directly involved in such an event;

f. Your business operations are interrupted by fire, flood, burglary, vandalism, product recall, bankruptcy, natural disaster, or financial default;

g. Your employer is deemed to be unsuitable for business due to burglary, or natural disaster and you or your traveling companion are directly involved as a key employee of the disaster recovery team. This coverage applies only if insurance was purchased within fifteen (15) calendar days of initial covered trip payment;

h. You or your traveling companion are called to active military duty to provide aid or relief in the event of a natural disaster, or military leave is revoked or reassigned within thirty (30) days of the scheduled departure date, except because of war, the War Powers Act, or disciplinary action. The military leave for the dates of travel must have been approved prior to the effective date.

25. You or Your Traveling Companion are required to work during Your Trip and directly involved in a merger or acquisition. The company that is involved in said event must currently employ You or Your Traveling Companion and the action requires You or Your Traveling Companion to work as a result. You or Your Traveling Companion must be an active, full-time employee and cannot be a company owner or partner;

26. Your or Your Traveling Companion’s place of employment is deemed to be unsuitable for business due to burglary, vandalism or a Natural Disaster and You or Your Traveling Companion are directly involved as a member or as an employee of the disaster recovery team who is responsible for policy and decision making and are required to work as a result;

TRIP INTERRUPTION

If You must start Your Trip late or are unable to complete Your Trip, We will reimburse You, up to the Maximum Benefit Amount shown in the Schedule of Benefits, for the unused, forfeited, prepaid non-refundable Payments or Deposits paid for the Travel Arrangements You purchased for Your Trip plus the Additional Transportation Cost paid to:

a) join Your Trip if You must depart after Your Scheduled Departure Date or travel via alternate travel arrangements;
b) rejoin Your Trip from the point where You interrupted Your Trip to the next Scheduled Destination; or
c) transport You to Your originally scheduled Return Destination of Your Trip;

The benefit payable for the above will not exceed the cost of a one-way economy airfare (or first or business class, if the original tickets were first or business class) by the most direct route less any refunds paid or payable for Your unused original tickets.

Trip Interruption must occur while coverage is in effect for You due to any of the following covered Unforeseen reasons, as defined:

If You cancel due to a covered Unforeseen reason, and You used frequent traveler awards, such as frequent flier miles or hotel rewards, for any part of Your Trip, We will reimburse You for the fees You pay up to the Maximum Benefit Amount listed in the Schedule of Benefits to re-deposit those miles or rewards in Your account.

If You cancel or reschedule Your Trip due to a covered Unforeseen reason, We will reimburse You up to the sub-limit listed in the Schedule of Benefits for the reissue fee paid to the airline to change Your tickets.

Payable benefit amounts are reduced by any refunds or reimbursements to which You are entitled from any Travel Supplier, whether You requested reimbursement or not. Your or Your Traveling Companion’s place of employment is rendered unsuitable for business or company operations within fourteen (14) days of the Scheduled Departure Date of Your Trip due to fire, flood, other Natural Disaster, Bankruptcy or Default, vandalism, or burglary, requiring You or Your Traveling Companion to work as a result;

Trip Interruption

If You must start Your Trip later than scheduled or are unable to complete Your Trip due to one of the covered Unforeseen reasons listed below, We will reimburse You, up to the Maximum Benefit Amount shown in the Schedule of Benefits, for the following:

1. unused, Pre-paid, nonrefundable Payments or Deposits You paid for Your Travel Arrangements insured under this Policy, and any fees imposed in accordance with The Jones Act;

2. plus one of the following transportation expenses:

a. the Additional Transportation Cost to reach Your scheduled destination if Your departure is delayed and You leave on Your Trip after Your Scheduled Departure Date and time;

b. the Additional Transportation Cost for You to reach the Scheduled Return Destination of Your Trip; or

c. the Additional Transportation Cost for You to rejoin Your Trip in progress from the point where You interrupted Your Trip.

We will also reimburse You, up to the Maximum Benefit Amount shown in the Schedule of Benefits, for the additional single supplement cost You pay as the result of a change in the per person occupancy rate for Your Travel Arrangements if Your Traveling Companion’s Trip is interrupted for one of the covered Unforeseen reasons listed below and You do not interrupt Your Trip.

We will also reimburse You up to the sub-limit listed in the Schedule of Benefits for reasonable and necessary paid costs to drive or transport Your Covered Vehicle to Your Home if you meet all of the following.

1. You are using Your Covered Vehicle on the Trip.

2. the Covered Vehicle is with You at the place where the Trip is interrupted.

3. the place where the Trip is interrupted is one hundred (100) miles or more away from Your Home.

4. You are medically unable to drive Your Covered Vehicle Home due to a covered Sickness, Injury or death.

In no event shall the amount reimbursed for this benefit exceed the lesser of the Pre-paid Payments or Deposits made for Your Trip or the Maximum Benefit Amount shown in the Schedule of Benefits.

Trip Interruption must be due to one of the following Unforeseen reasons that occurs while this coverage is in effect for You:

In the situation of self-employment, proof of self-employment and a notarized statement confirming You or Your Traveling Companion are unable to travel due to job obligations will be required;

mm. Your or Your Traveling Companion’s employer is either merging with another company or is being acquired by another company, is subject to a voluntary or government required product recall, or is in bankruptcy proceedings, requiring Your or Your Traveling Companion’s direct involvement. You or Your Traveling Companion must be an active, full-time employee and cannot be a company owner or partner;

nn. Your or Your Traveling Companion’s place of employment is rendered unsuitable for business or company operations within fourteen (14) Days of the Scheduled Departure Date of Your Trip due to fire, flood, other Natural Disaster, Bankruptcy or Default, vandalism, or burglary, requiring You or Your Traveling Companion to work as a result;

Trip Interruption

If You must start Your Trip later than scheduled or are unable to complete Your Trip due to one of the covered Unforeseen reasons listed below, We will reimburse You, up to the Maximum Benefit Amount shown in the Schedule of Benefits, for the following:

1. unused, Pre-paid, nonrefundable Payments or Deposits You paid for Your Travel Arrangements insured under this Policy, and any fees imposed in accordance with The Jones Act;

2. plus one of the following transportation expenses:

a. the Additional Transportation Cost to reach Your scheduled destination if Your departure is delayed and You leave on Your Trip after Your Scheduled Departure Date and time;

b. the Additional Transportation Cost for You to reach the Scheduled Return Destination of Your Trip; or

c. the Additional Transportation Cost for You to rejoin Your Trip in progress from the point where You interrupted Your Trip.

We will also reimburse You, up to the Maximum Benefit Amount shown in the Schedule of Benefits, for the additional single supplement cost You pay as the result of a change in the per person occupancy rate for Your Travel Arrangements if Your Traveling Companion’s Trip is interrupted for one of the covered Unforeseen reasons listed below and You do not interrupt Your Trip.

We will also reimburse You up to the sub-limit listed in the Schedule of Benefits for reasonable and necessary paid costs to drive or transport Your Covered Vehicle to Your Home if you meet all of the following.

1. You are using Your Covered Vehicle on the Trip.

2. the Covered Vehicle is with You at the place where the Trip is interrupted.

3. the place where the Trip is interrupted is one hundred (100) miles or more away from Your Home.

4. You are medically unable to drive Your Covered Vehicle Home due to a covered Sickness, Injury or death.

In no event shall the amount reimbursed for this benefit exceed the lesser of the Pre-paid Payments or Deposits made for Your Trip or the Maximum Benefit Amount shown in the Schedule of Benefits.

Trip Interruption must be due to one of the following Unforeseen reasons that occurs while this coverage is in effect for You:

dd. a transfer of employment of two hundred fifty (250) miles or more that requires the relocation of Your or Your Traveling Companion’s Home. Notification of the transfer must be issued during the Trip. Employment must have been with the same employer for at least one (1) continuous year, including the date this Policy was purchased;

ff. being required to work during the scheduled Trip. Written confirmation of the previously approved time off and the revocation must be provided by an unrelated company official and/or the company’s Human Resources Department. In the situation of self-employment, proof of self-employment and a notarized statement confirming You or Your Traveling Companion are unable to travel due to job obligations will be required;

gg. Your or Your Traveling Companion’s employer is either merging with another company or is being acquired by another company, is subject to a voluntary or government required product recall, or is in bankruptcy proceedings, requiring Your or Your Traveling Companion’s direct involvement. Trip Cancellation

If You cancel Your Trip prior to departure due to one of the covered Unforeseen reasons listed below, We will reimburse You, up to the Maximum Benefit Amount shown in the Schedule of Benefits for the amount of unused, non-refundable, Pre-paid Payments or Deposits for the Travel Arrangements You purchased for Your Trip.

We will also reimburse You, up to the Maximum Benefit Amount shown in the Schedule of Benefits for the additional single supplement cost You must pay as the result of a change in the per person occupancy rate for Your Travel Arrangements if Your Traveling Companion’s Trip is cancelled for one of the covered Unforeseen reasons listed below and You do not cancel Your Trip.

If You cancel due to a covered Unforeseen reason, and You used frequent traveler awards, such as frequent flier miles or hotel rewards, for any part of Your Trip, We will reimburse You for the fees You pay up to the Maximum Benefit Amount listed in the Schedule of Benefits to re-deposit those miles or rewards in Your account.

If You cancel or reschedule Your Trip due to a covered Unforeseen reason, We will reimburse You up to the sub-limit listed in the Schedule of Benefits for the reissue fee paid to the airline to change Your tickets.

Payable benefit amounts are reduced by any refunds or reimbursements to which You are entitled from any Travel Supplier, whether You requested reimbursement or not. In no event shall the amount reimbursed under this benefit exceed the lesser of the Pre-paid Payments or Deposits made for Your Travel Arrangements or the Maximum Benefit Amount shown in the Schedule of Benefits.

Cancellation must be due to one of the following Unforeseen reasons that occurs after the purchase of this Policy and while this coverage is in effect for You:

hh. a transfer of employment of two hundred fifty (250) miles or more that requires the relocation of Your or Your Traveling Companion’s Home. Notification of the transfer must occur within thirty (30) days of the Scheduled Departure Date of Your Trip. Employment must have been with the same employer for at least one (1) continuous year, including the date this Policy was purchased;

jj. being required to work during the scheduled Trip. Written confirmation of the previously approved time off and the revocation must be provided by an unrelated company official and/or the company’s Human Resources Department. In the situation of self employment, proof of selfemployment and a notarized statement confirming You or Your Traveling Companion are unable to travel due to job obligations will be required;

This benefit is not available to independent contractors, temporary employees or self employed individuals, or if You or Your Traveling Companion are a company owner or partner;

Trip Interruption

If You must start Your Trip later than scheduled or are unable to complete Your Trip due to one of the covered Unforeseen reasons listed below, We will reimburse You, up to the Maximum Benefit Amount shown in the Schedule of Benefits, for the following:

Cancellation must be due to one of the following Unforeseen reasons that occurs after the purchase of this Policy and while this coverage is in effect for You:
