What is “Maximum Trip Length” in Travel Insurance?

“Maximum Trip Length” refers to the longest single trip you can take during the time you’re covered by an annual travel insurance plan.

Trip length is determined by adding up the number of days you’re away from home, starting on your scheduled departure date and ending on your scheduled return date. The Maximum Trip Length an annual policy will cover can vary, but most range between 30-180 days.

A policy’s Maximum Trip Length is an important consideration when comparing plans from multiple travel insurance companies.

What is Annual Travel Insurance?

Annual travel insurance policies, commonly referred to as multi-trip plans, are a type of coverage designed to fit the needs of frequent travelers. Rather than purchasing a single-trip plan each time you travel, an annual travel insurance plan can offer similar coverage for a 12-month period.

Purchasing annual coverage is typically cost-effective if you plan on traveling at least three times a year. Most multi-trips plans include popular travel insurance benefits such as trip delay, baggage delay, baggage loss, and medical coverage.

What is the Maximum Trip Length Annual Travel Insurance Covers?

While multi-trip travel insurance policies typically don’t limit the number of trips that can be taken during the coverage period, most plans have strict rules on the number of days an individual trip can last.

The Maximum Trip Length of most annual travel insurance policies can range from 30-180 days. However, the most common Maximum Trip Length you’ll find when comparing annual plans is 90 days, meaning that any trip that lasts more than 90 days won’t be eligible for coverage.

Is Annual Travel Insurance Worth It?

Yes, annual travel insurance can provide cost-effective travel insurance coverage to frequent leisure and business travelers. Like single-trip travel insurance, these policies provide peace of mind and valuable travel health insurance to those taking international trips, offering benefits such as Emergency Medical and Medical Evacuation coverage.

Unlike single-trip policies, however, most annual plans do not include Trip Interruption or Trip Cancellation. If you want to protect your trip costs, and don’t have existing trip protection through a credit card, an annual travel insurance policy may not be for you.

Please be aware that coverage and eligibility requirements for this benefit differ by policy. The tables below show the providers that offer Maximum Trip Length coverage.
