What is Pre-Existing Condition Travel Insurance?

Pre-Existing Condition travel insurance is a type of coverage designed to provide peace of mind and financial protection to travelers that experience trip disruptions relating to a pre-existing medical condition.

Travel insurance plans that include this coverage can provide reimbursement if a pre-existing medical condition flare-up causes a medical emergency, cancellation, or other covered scenario during your policy’s coverage period.

Pricing, exclusions, lookback periods, and eligibility requirements can vary from one travel insurance provider to the next.

What Is A Pre-Existing Medical Condition?

Travel insurance companies have unique definitions for what they consider to be a pre-existing medical condition. However, the term typically applies to an injury, sickness, or other medical condition that was prevalent prior to a policy’s effective date.

Pre-existing conditions are typically excluded from coverage, unless a policy includes an exclusion waiver. Most travel insurance providers impose a lookback period to verify if a claim is relating to a pre-existing medical condition. A lookback period is a time-frame, which typically ranges from 60-180 days, in which a provider can review your medical records and history.

Common examples of a pre-existing medical condition:

  • Heart attacks
  • Asthma
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Arthritis
  • Cancer

What is a Pre-Existing Condition Waiver?

A pre-existing condition waiver is a clause that removes any exclusions relating to pre-existing medical conditions, extending valuable travel protection to the policyholder in the event of a flare-up or related medical emergency.

A pre-existing condition waiver also removes any applicable lookback period, meaning a provider won’t review your medical records. With a waiver in place, travelers with existing health conditions may be protected in the following ways:

  • Emergency Medical Coverage: Reimbursement for medical treatment, hospital stays, medication, and other medical bills relating to a pre-existing medical condition.
  • Medical Evacuation Coverage: Reimbursement for medical expenses relating to an emergency evacuation if deemed necessary by an attending physician.
  • Trip Cancellation Insurance: Coverage for your prepaid, non-refundable trip costs if a pre-existing condition worsens unexpectedly before a trip and results in a cancellation.
  • Trip Interruption Insurance: Coverage for unused, non-refundable costs if you’re forced to cut your trip short due to a pre-existing condition flare up or medical emergency.

How to Qualify for Pre-Existing Condition Coverage?

Not all travelers qualify for a pre-existing medical condition exclusion waiver. While eligibility requirements can vary from plan to the next, most travel insurance companies will consider the following:

  • Trip Costs: Qualifying travelers must insure 100% of their prepaid, non-refundable trip costs such as airfare, lodging, and excursion expenses.
  • Time of Purchase: Pre-Existing Condition coverage is time-sensitive, and most plans require you to buy travel insurance within 14-21 days after your initial trip deposit date.
  • Medical History: Travelers must be fit to travel at the time of their scheduled departure date. A note from a medical professional may be required in the event of a claim.

For specific exclusions, we recommend contacting your travel insurance provider directly or reading the fine print in your travel insurance policy’s Certificate of Insurance.

What Pre-Existing Conditions Are Not Covered by a Waiver?

Before you purchase travel medical insurance, it’s important to note that a wide-range of health conditions are not eligible for travel insurance coverage.

Even if you meet a policy’s eligibility requirements, most providers won’t offer coverage if you file a travel insurance claim relating to the following medical issues:

  • Alzheimer’s disease and dementia
  • Depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions
  • Alcohol or drug-related medical conditions
  • Pregnancy

How Much Does A Pre-Existing Condition Waiver Cost?

If you qualify for coverage, most travel insurance companies will include a pre-existing condition waiver at no additional cost.

With that in mind, the cost of pre-existing condition coverage will be similar to any other comprehensive travel insurance policy. These plans will typically cost between 5-10% of your total prepaid, non-refundable trip costs.

Is Pre-Existing Condition Coverage Worth It?

Yes, purchasing a policy with the Pre-Existing Condition benefit is worth the investment if you’re concerned that a flare-up may disrupt your trip.

This coverage is especially important if you’re heading abroad, as your domestic healthcare policy, such as Medicare or an employer-sponsored plan, likely won’t provide coverage for medical care overseas.

If you want health insurance for a pre-existing medical condition for your trip, it’s important that you follow your plan’s eligibility requirements to ensure you qualify, such as purchasing a policy within 14-21 days of your initial trip payment.

Many of the best travel insurance companies now offer plans with Pre-Existing Condition coverage. We recommend comparing policies from at least 2-3 providers, paying close attention to exclusions, fine print, and other details found in the Certificate of Insurance.

Please be aware that coverage and eligibility requirements for this benefit differ by policy. The tables below show the providers that offer Pre-Existing Condition coverage.
